DAVISON — If you like the city’s newly redeveloped basketball courts at Jack Abernathy Regional Park, you can show it by voting for the courts to receive a state award.

City officials have put the basketball court project in the running for an award through the Michigan Municipal League.

The courts are in consideration for the 2018 Community Excellence Awards. Residents can now vote online for the Davison courts as they compete with projects from across the state, said city officials.

“We put the basketball courts in as a rehabilitation project,” said City Manager Andrea Schroeder. “People can vote for it once a day until July 29.”

The MML will actively promote the CEA entries as a whole, but online voting counts for a full 25 percent of the total score.

Voting is open to everyone, but you may only cast one vote per day. The top four projects – based on online votes and judges’ rankings – will go on to compete at Convention in Grand Rapids, Sept. 20-22.

The project is described on the MML site as “a collaborative effort bringing the community together.” This venture was made possible with fundraising events which included Comedy for the Courts and the City of Davison Golf Outing. Additional funds were obtained through the MDNR Passport Grant and numerous generous community donations.

Total cost of the project was $45,000.

According to the description on the MML website, the basketball courts represent the Davison community. The courts are nestled close to the schools and display the cardinal colors of maroon and gold to represent the school district. The courts, it said, accompany other amenities including tennis courts, volleyball courts, a skate park and a playscape.

The Davison basketball courts are competing with Fraser's McKinley Barrier- Free Park and Playground, Muskegon’s Western Market and Saginaw’s SVRC Downtown Marketplace.
